The WONDERfools Episode 4 Recap: Dr. Ha’s Dark Past and Chae-ni’s Emotional Ending
The story begins with a flashback centered on Ju-ran and Dr. Ha. Long before the current events, Ju-ran struggled with a hearing disability, and Dr. Ha was the person who gave her hearing aids. That memory clearly shaped her loyalty toward him, even years later.
The flashback also revisits the fire at Hawondo Lab. Before being sent to prison, Dr. Ha tells Ju-ran, Pal-ho, and Ho-ran to remain hidden until he returns. Once he is finally released years later, he wastes no time restarting the Wunderkinder project and continuing his search for the mysterious Child of Eternity.

Back in the present day, Dr. Ha confronts Jeon-bok alongside Ju-ran and Ho-ran. He blames her for helping fund the original experiments, accusing her of playing a major role in everything that happened to the children.
Jeon-bok defends herself by insisting she believed the research would help sick children rather than harm them. But Dr. Ha refuses to listen. His focus remains entirely on finding the Child of Eternity.
Using her abilities, Ju-ran forces information out of Jeon-bok. However, Jeon-bok claims the child died years ago. Dr. Ha dismisses that possibility immediately because, according to him, the Child of Eternity was never capable of dying in the first place.
That revelation leads into another painful flashback involving Un-jeong. He watches scientists repeatedly experimenting on a young boy and eventually reaches his limit. Unable to endure the child’s suffering any longer, he uses his powers to stop the experiment, accidentally causing the fire that destroys the lab.
In the present, Un-jeong wakes up from a nightmare about those events. Even in his sleep, his powers spiral out of control and damage the house around him. Elsewhere, Jeon-bok realizes Dr. Ha manipulated information out of her during their meeting.
Meanwhile, Chae-ni innocently continues testing her own powers outside. Her biggest dream is surprisingly simple, she wants to see the Northern Lights someday.
The next day, Chae-ni, Gyeon-un, and Ro-bin participate in a cleanup drive at City Hall and ask Un-jeong to help train them. Unfortunately, Un-jeong is emotionally exhausted and clearly irritated. Things become even more tense when members of the Church of Salvation arrive nearby, immediately putting him on edge.
Instead of properly teaching the group, Un-jeong tells them to repeatedly activate their abilities until they figure things out themselves.
Oddly enough, the plan works.
As the trio experiments with their powers, they slowly uncover what triggers them. Chae-ni realizes her teleportation activates whenever her heartbeat rises. Ro-bin discovers his abilities emerge when his emotions become overwhelming, while Gyeon-un learns he sticks to objects whenever he lies or becomes nervous.
Elsewhere, Dr. Ha receives bad news regarding another failed experiment involving Bong-pal. Without hesitation, he orders the scientists to eliminate him. Yu-ran begins worrying that all of them may eventually suffer the same fate, but Ju-ran still believes Dr. Ha will save them.
At the same time, Jun-mo meets Jeon-bok and shows her CCTV footage from the previous night. In the recording, Chae-ni accidentally catches Dr. Ha’s attention while experimenting with her powers outside. Dr. Ha immediately orders Pal-ho to kill her, but before he can attack, Chae-ni teleports away.
Not long afterward, Jeon-bok discovers Ho-ran has been disguising herself as Jun-mo using hallucination powers. Ho-ran emotionally confronts Jeon-bok for abandoning the children years ago and once again questions her about the Child of Eternity.
Although Ho-ran attempts to intimidate her, Jeon-bok refuses to break under pressure. Once the confrontation ends, she urgently asks Jun-mo to locate Chae-ni before Dr. Ha reaches her first.
Meanwhile, the younger group shares more personal reasons for wanting their powers. Chae-ni dreams of traveling to see the Northern Lights. Gyeon-un wants to become someone his daughter can admire, while Ro-bin admits he wants to stand up to the bullies who once humiliated him.
Those lighter moments disappear quickly once Pal-ho arrives at the junkyard where Un-jeong is supervising cleanup work.
Un-jeong immediately attacks him, but the situation escalates when Chae-ni accidentally teleports herself into the battle. She quickly brings Ro-bin to help, leading to a messy but entertaining fight sequence.
During the fight, Un-jeong reveals that Pal-ho is an actual Wunderkinder, making him significantly stronger than the others. Ro-bin and Un-jeong combine their abilities to hold him off, but Un-jeong gradually weakens as the battle continues.
Panicking, Chae-ni hugs Un-jeong and accidentally teleports both of them away from the junkyard.
At the same time, Ro-bin reaches an emotional breaking point and finally manages to stop a car thrown at him by Pal-ho.
Then the episode shifts into its emotional climax.
Chae-ni and Un-jeong suddenly appear beneath the Northern Lights, finally achieving Chae-ni’s dream. But the moment becomes devastating because Chae-ni is badly injured and slowly bleeding out.
Elsewhere, Jun-mo desperately searches for her and finds Gyeon-un stuck helplessly to the ceiling while panicking over the situation.
As the episode closes, Un-jeong desperately tries to save Chae-ni beneath the glowing sky. Just when everything feels hopeless, Chae-ni suddenly wakes up.
Episode Review
Episode 4 does a strong job expanding the larger mystery behind the Wunderkinder project while also giving the characters more emotional depth. The flashbacks involving the Child of Eternity were especially disturbing because they finally showed how cruel Dr. Ha truly is.
The episode also explains Un-jeong’s guilt much more clearly. His decision to destroy the lab now feels tragic rather than reckless because he was trying to stop a child from suffering endlessly.
At the same time, the drama still hasn’t fully explained why Chae-ni, Ro-bin, and Gyeon-un survived after coming into contact with the slime when everyone else died. That mystery remains one of the show’s biggest unanswered questions.
Still, the emotional pacing in this episode worked extremely well. The balance between comedy, action, mystery, and heartbreak felt much smoother here than in earlier episodes.
And honestly, that Northern Lights scene might be one of my favorite moments in the series so far.
